PermaLink To Mac or not to Mac?11/30/2009 09:36:21 AM

So that wonderful time has come, at the end of 3 years, where it is time to get a new laptop. I have stuck with IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads for the last 15 years but here I am considering a change to a Macbook Pro 17 inch. Why am I thinking about changing? To be honest I don't think I have a compelling business reason to do so. Partly it is because I am sick of Vista however I moved to Windows 7 about a month ago and have been pleasantly surprised so that really isn't a reason to move. Partly I see it as an opportunity to present to clients how Notes is supported on the Mac as well. However most of all I think it is probably more just a desire to see what people rave about.

So I am asking those that have done it/tried it should I do it? To Mac or not to Mac? that is the question:)

I have been thru a lot of points in my consideration and nearly came across a few show stoppers. The one that nearly blew the idea all together was my Telstra NextG Wireless card. This wasn't compatible so it was a definite show stopper. However I then received a new NextG 21 USB device and it supports Mac. So we are still on.

What software do I use? Well I have a cross role between business development and technology. In my business development role I use tools like Office (although this might give me the reason to move fully to symphony, MindManager, Notes 8.5.1, our finance system (Not mac compatible so hoping to use VMFusion for this), SnagIT (No mac version unfortunately but rumours of one coming), Camtasia, Adobe CS2, and a range of other bits and pieces. I think in most use cases for business development a Mac should be fine.

In my technology role I use Domino Designer, Lotus Forms Designer, WebSphere Portlet Factory, Rational App Developer, as well as frequently running up VM images with the latest Portal, Connections, etc etc. So these products are probably the most troublesome in that they don't have Mac version. Again I am assuming they would work with VMFusion. Any comments?

So I am interested in hearing your (non-fanboy) opinions. Is Mac worth the switch? Given the above do you think it would work for me?

<edit> The last thing I forgot to mention is that I have Dual external screens. This has taken some research in how I would do this with a Macbook Pro. I understand that you can have one external and the Macbook screen at the same time however I still want to have that Dual 24 Inch external screen experience. The only way I can see to do this is the Matrox DualHeadToGo devices. These don't come cheap and considering I will need one for home and one for the office I would love to hear alternate solutions. </edit>

I tried using a MacBook Pro about 2 years ago. I switched back and i'm now happy with Win7. Here are my reasons:
1. MS Office was a dog on a Mac.
2. Enterprise Accounting app. ( had to run Parallels. Too much of an inconvenience)
3. Spell checker on Lotus Notes would not run properly. (Use Passport Advantage to submit the bug) At the time there was no resolution.
4. I was too used to a Win environment.
I have to say though at the time, the Mac offered a very nice UI and aesthetically pleasing case.

I moved to Mac a few month ago and I have to say, that the experience is good, but not overheliming. I like the ui and I like to work with iWork. Windows 7 on Parallels does not work. That is a mess. I would need the Domino Desinger.
Notes on Mac, is ok, but it is faster on Windows and it has some unnerving things on a Mac. The Screenshot tool of the integrated Sametime has some strange behavior.
On startup Notes always wants to come in the front and that stupid Notes-is-starting Window does not go away either.
I love the fast startup. I love the design. I love the long battery life. I love the touchpad - on my old thinkpad it is turned of, because it always got in the way.
The last two or three thinkpads we bought, where just ...p! Sorry about that. Frequent rebuild. Battery's defect after 9 month and so on...
... and everybody is looking, when you show up with a Mac on a conference, it just helps to get contact. But that effect will wear of in a short time.
I would do it again. Once in a while, boy's need new toys.
... and I can live without MSOffice. It is no problem at all. I have never run in a Situation where having no DarkSide-Office would have been a show stopper.
Cheers
Christian

I have a Macbook Pro 15". I really like it but it sucks as a Windows machine and Apple really does not care (see this link for a few issues I had http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1876027&tstart=15 ). I have to say that it works now but having to use tools like Riva Tuner is very disappointing. I run VMWare Fusion 4 for Domino Designer and MS Office but find it slow with Windows 7 (have not tested with Win XP). The 3 years warranty plan is very expensive and the (just) two USB ports suck (although they are very fast). I really like keyboard, display and the unibody case. In fact I have been searching for another laptop that comes close to the unibody experience but failed so far. I like Mac OSX and for my recent Grails experiments it is a very fine development machine. So my feelings are mixed but to be honest I configure a second Macbook Pro at least once a month in the Apple shop (but haven't ordered yet).

I'm a big fan of the Mac, but it sounds like you need to stick with Windows.
While VM Windows support is good it isn't perfect. I use a Mac 100% of the time at home but haven't been able to make the switch at work for the same reasons already cited in other comments.

I am quite suprised at the response. I was expecting heaps of positive encouragement for the move. Thanks for the honest opinons. I will need to think this thru!

I do actually have an out if I go down this path in that we are hiring a new marketing person in Jan. I could always give it a go and if it isn't for me plam it off to the marketing team!

Adam, just get one of each.. you have two screens! In fact get another screen and try Ubuntu as well. Just like a mac except cheaper :)

Good idea Marty! I may have found another way. Apple are seeing if they can offer me a demo machine for a month so I can give it a real crack and see if can work for my requirements.

I'd moved to it about 3 years. The factor I toward Mac from Win is that all my colleague who are using Mac and powerfull knowledge with java. They encourage me to using the difference OS. After changing it, I found that it's some convience and inconvience. The most attract and useful for me are that the design and some useful software. In my opinion, the behavior when you using Mac need to change, ex: that don't need to have the tool bar on the bottom that show the application you have using. Instead of you can press F9 to show all front end application. That's a difference behavior between Mac and Win to know what application you'd used. There are many other behaviors is so different unlike Win. But you should fit or discover it. But the difference for me is so useful and advantage. Mac has many powerful software to use like textmate(although it has some problem on Chinese font), bbedit, item, omnigraffle... They are all useful even more than related software on Win. However, they are still some unconvience for some softwares unsupport. Because windows still the most arrange in the world. Some software vendor when they develop the convience software, the market is the first they think about. But, it will get changing when there is more and more focus in the Internet. Just a little opinion about my experience using Mac. thank you.
